East Meets West: Jewels of the Maharajas from the Al Thani Collection
Exhibited from November 3rd, 2018 to February 24th, 2019
The Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco welcomed the Cartier Collection to be part of the Exhibition East Meets West: Jewels of the Maharajas from the Al Thani Collection. Sheikh Hamad bin Abdullah Al Thani’s collection has been displayed in museums all over the world including New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2014, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 2015, and the Grand Palais in Paris as well as the Palace Museum in Beijing in 2017. From November 3rd, 2018 to February 24th, 2019, San Francisco held this impressive exhibition featuring 150 precious pieces dating from the time of the Mughal Empire to the present day. The exquisite exhibits highlighted the history of lavish Indian court jewelry and the influence of Indian jewelry traditions on European creations. For the occasion the Cartier Collection lent two ceremonial necklaces that used to belong to the Maharajah of Patiala. These imposing monochrome pieces of jewelry, commissioned in 1928, combine local traditions with unique expertise. Contemporary Cartier creations from the Al Thani Collection were also on display, illustrating how the Maison's stylistic identity continues to be influenced by Indian culture.
