Juste un Clou

Compelling and exceptional, the Juste un Clou bracelet inspires digital artists everywhere.

For this creative endeavor, Cartier has selected artists whose performances, ranging from subversive to poetic, resonate with the rebellious energy of Juste un Clou. All of them — photographers, painters, videographers, and visual artists — had complete carte blanche to depict their interpretation of Juste un Clou by Cartier. This open-ended collaboration has created images that are idiosyncratic, visually powerful, romantic, and unexpected, hailing from Dubai, London, Paris, Berlin, New York, Shanghai, and Hong Kong.

Judith Supine

Judith Supine

BIOGRAPHY
Judith Supine is an artist living and working in Brooklyn, New York. He began to speak a month after his seventeenth birthday. Before then, he could not physically articulate words; he could only squeak and grunt. He often drew pictures to communicate with his family. His mom saved all of them – one of the many reasons why she is great. Supine uses materials that are free, or at least very cheap, such as an X-ACTO knife, glue sticks, and ugly paints. He finds his magazines from people's trash cans, the public library, dentist's offices, his little sister's magazine collection.

APPROACH OF THE JUSTE UN CLOU PROJECT
I would walk across the Williamsburg Bridge every morning. I started fantasizing about installing a Juste un Clou sculpture at the top of one of the towers. I wanted to created magical little worlds.

ANECDOTE/STORY ABOUT THE WORK
I made a floating sculpture of my dad wearing a bikini. I swam out into the East River midday on a Sunday. My brother was holding a rope to pull me back to shore. He let go of the rope, and the current swept me downstream.

CURTIS KULIG

Curtis Kulig

BIOGRAPHY
Artist Curtis Kulig lives and works in New York City. A decade ago, his private plea imbued with futility and irony, 'Love Me,' became part of the urban fabric of the city. A loyal audience ensued, recasting the declaration with optimism. His studio practice consists of paintings and drawings often done in series that explore his emotional vulnerabilities.

APPROACH OF THE JUSTE UN CLOU PROJECT
Cartier's Juste un Clou was designed in the 70s in New York. It was an impulsive and wild era, a time when something ordinary could become extravagant – just ask anyone who was at Warhol’s Factory or Studio 54. So I wanted to choose words reflective of that time but that still resonated today and put this very emotional jewelry piece at the center of it, replacing each O. The letter O is so round and inclusive; it just lent itself perfectly to the thought. For me, it is more than the words. It’s the motion of the script, the sweeping nature of it that I like.

ANECDOTE/STORY ABOUT THE WORK
I create a lot of small films. While I was working on this project, I was pairing videos of construction sites with classical music. Maybe it was the nail shape that inspired me.

Molly Catherine Scannell

Molly Catherine Scannell

BIOGRAPHY
I will always sneak away and mostly, curiously, secretly observe the world as it whirls around me with a big smile. Whatever I do is fueled by passion and desire — these are my minimal requirements.

APPROACH OF THE JUSTE UN CLOU PROJECT
Process is my favorite part of working. Bar none. Leafing through killer mags, blogs, crushing Pinterest and taking notes of my favorite things that feel "right." Collaborating with Cartier was exceptionally thought-provoking. The Juste un Clou messaging was so fresh & honest to work with — it’s the type of work that I love to do. “What should be remembered about this unique bracelet is that Juste un Clou is more than a product, it’s a spirit, something you desire, it’s a part of you.” How can I NOT be excited to work with this!

ANECDOTE/STORY ABOUT THE WORK
As with familiar strangers, removing the "identity" in art brings an opportunity to tell astory on a larger scale or on a totally different level.

Andrew Westermann

Andrew Westermann

BIOGRAPHY
The Cologne-based artist is also a former international model. Throughout his time in fashion he learned a great deal about art and beauty. His art draws on his dual background, and is infused with his romantic view of life. Simple but elegant strokes, skulls, poems, and contrasting colors give his artwork its unique character.

APPROACH OF THE JUSTE UN CLOU PROJECT
Cartier in my opinion stands for elegance, sophistication, and exclusivity. The challenge and the excitement in the collaboration come from mixing these idealswith mine. Not comparing but complementing each other. Complementing the beautiful object with an elegant stroke and the color gold. Adding the dark andmysterious red that stands for Cartier and adding my signature skeletons.

MELODI MEADOWS

Melodi Meadows

BIOGRAPHY
Raised outside Dallas, Texas, Melodi Meadows grew up on a farm with three older siblings. Her Mother Leslie, a true hippie of the time, homeschooled all four children, allowing Melodi the time to explore her imagination and find her true love at a very young age: art. Melodi’s childhood formula for a perfect day included a disposable camera, drawing supplies, and a reconfiguration of the clothing her mother bought her. At seventeen, Melodi began fashion school, exploring art through apparel. Although she loved fashion, she soon found out that she did not want to design it. At nineteen, she began drawing and painting classes at the University of North Texas. This was the right match for her and she spent the next 4 years on a creative high. With an infinite passion for creation, she delved into deep parts of her psyche to explore ideas and experiments in a wide array of art forms and the complexity of human emotion that is birthed through them. During her last year in college at age 22, she met an up-and-coming photographer named Asher Moss on his Miss Lonely book tour. She would say it was love at first sight. The following year they took a month-long road trip, moving their lives to the west coast; California was now home. Asher, who had become an established photographer, acted as Melodi’s mentor as she began a new adventure in the field of photography and creative direction, where today she works with large global brands, as well as with an array of local and national boutique companies.

APPROACH OF THE JUSTE UN CLOU PROJECT
When Cartier brought the Juste Un Clou collaboration to me, it felt like a perfect fit. Inspired by the 70s, a period that had some of the most influential artists to date, the bracelet embodies the state of mind I grew up calling my own. I turned to the artists of the time who have infiltrated my record cabinets, bookshelves, and closets since I was fourteen. I revisited their stories of a time when they found themselves to be truly free: moments that almost sounded too good to be true. I would imagine myself there using all my senses to fully understand the images or words I was taking in. Sometimes, it almost felt like I was sitting on the couch next to Keith Richards, hearing him pick the strings to “Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)." Once I entered the mind of Juste Un Clou, I began drawing and collaging the images that inspired that mood in me; a sultry and edgy visual story of a wild and free-spirited individual with nothing but true freedom on their mind.

ANECDOTE/STORY ABOUT THE WORK
Finding the right talent is always an essential piece to the puzzle. Being in the fashion industry, I am surrounded by many talented individuals, but what I was looking for was a person who never said they were sorry for being themselves. I was reminded of a young lady I worked with in New York City: Kaiman Kazazian. The way she drank from her wine glass and whipped her long black hair to look over her shoulder said it all. She owned whatever room she walked into and I knew she would be perfect for this project.

Chen Bingdai

Chen Bingdai

BIOGRAPHY
Chen Bingdai is a freelance photographer based in Hangzhou, China. He studied industrial design in college where he developed a passion for photography instead.
The simplicity and the minimalist composition in his work are inspired by traditional Chinese painting.
Most of the time he photographs his friends and the city he lives in. He likes being inspired by the people around him.

APPROACH OF THE JUSTE UN CLOU PROJECT
The Juste un Clou series gives me a very liberating spirit. It presents no boundaries. It’s very conceptual, yet it’s down to earth.
I plan to conduct the shoot in a simplistic and conceptual way. Hands and Juste un Clou products will be tastefully curated together in one frame, while leaving a lot of room for the audience to imagine the story behind the scene – whether the hands/objects are interacting with nature (lights and shadows, plants) or humans (oneself, other people). And through this process, I hope to convey Juste un Clou’s free-minded spirit, that things are always open to your interpretation.
In an aesthetic sense, the photos will look undersaturated and underexposed to create a layer of tones and a moody feeling. Also, I plan to use a lot of negative space to complement the naturally positioned objects, and visually draw the audience’s attention to the product and its overall experimental, edgy vibes.

Xiao Han

Xiao Han

BIOGRAPHY
I’m Xiao Han, a politics teacher and part-time photographer who was born and raised in Shanghai. I feel that I perform these two different roles effortlessly and with ease. I feel that my identity as a politics teacher allows me to create quality visual work — my style is simplistic with a high impact.

APPROACH OF THE JUSTE UN CLOU PROJECT
Juste un Clou is more than just a simple product. To me, it is a product that is full of stories to be told. I want to use four pictures to represent Juste un Clou. The themes are: Keep Moving, Be Wild, No More Hiding, and Be Loved. I want to collaborate with Cartier to convey positive energy for Juste un Clou.

ANECDOTE/STORY ABOUT THE WORK
When I was creating this work, it was quite a challenge due to Shanghai’s unpredictable weather; there were only two sunny days this whole month. When I wake up in the morning, I would pull open my blinds and if there is sun, I go out to shoot. I rely on the weather to create my work, which can sometimes make me feel helpless but at least I can adjust accordingly.

CHO GI SEOK

Cho Gi Seok

BIOGRAPHY
Cho Gi Seok was born in 1992 and is based in Seoul, South Korea.
His work plays with different genres, such as photography, graphic design and objects.

APPROACH OF THE JUSTE UN CLOU PROJECT
Juste un Clou is groundbreaking in that it is an ordinary object transformed into a precious piece of jewelry. In addition, it brings the beginning and the end together at a common point, by curving the straight line of a nail which would usually never come full circle. My work evolved around this same concept – the idea of things that usually would never meet, like the beginning and the end.

ANECDOTE/STORY ABOUT THE WORK
I was fortunate enough to get the chance to exhibit my work at the Panthère de Cartier pre-launch event in Seoul. It was great timing and a great crowd!
